Solar Water Heater Installation in Chennai & Tamil Nadu
A solar water heater is the fastest-paying solar product a Tamil Nadu home can buy. It replaces the single largest electrical load in most households — the geyser — and typically pays for itself in two to three years. GenSolar supplies, installs and services ETC and FPC systems from 100 to 500 litres.

ETC vs FPC — which solar water heater should you buy?
There are two mainstream technologies. ETC, or evacuated tube collector, uses rows of double-walled glass tubes with a vacuum between the walls. The vacuum is an excellent insulator, so ETC systems heat faster, perform noticeably better on cloudy days and in cooler months, and cost less. Their weakness is the glass: a tube can crack under hail or impact, and in hard-water areas the tubes scale up faster and need periodic descaling.
FPC, or flat plate collector, uses a copper absorber sheet with copper risers under toughened glass in an insulated aluminium box. It is more robust, handles hard water and higher pressure far better, lasts longer, and is the right choice for buildings with an overhead pressure pump or a multi-storey plumbing run. It costs roughly 25% to 40% more than an equivalent ETC system and heats slightly more slowly in winter.
For most independent houses in Chennai with normal metro water, ETC is the value pick. For borewell or hard water, apartments with pressure pumps, hotels, hostels and commercial kitchens, we recommend FPC almost every time.
- ETC — lower cost, faster heating, better in cloudy weather, glass tubes
- FPC — higher cost, pressure-tolerant, best for hard water and long life
- Hard water or a pressure pump means FPC, not ETC
- Both need a shadow-free terrace area facing broadly south
What capacity does your household need?
Sizing is simple: allow roughly 25 litres of hot water per person per day for bathing, plus extra for a kitchen. A 100 litre system suits a couple or a small family of two to three. 150 litres is right for a typical family of three to four. 200 litres covers four to six people comfortably and is the most common size we install in Chennai independent houses. 300 litres and above suits joint families, guest houses, small hostels and homes with multiple bathrooms in simultaneous use.
Undersizing is the most common mistake. A 100 litre tank serving five people runs out by the second bath, and the family quietly goes back to the electric geyser — which defeats the whole purchase. When in doubt, go one size up; the incremental cost is small relative to the system.
Brands we supply and install
We supply and install V-Guard, Racold, Supreme, Havells, Sudarshan Saur and Tata solar water heaters, choosing the model to suit your water quality, roof access and pressure requirement rather than pushing one brand. All units we sell come with the manufacturer's warranty registered in your name and are installed by our own plumbing and electrical crew.
Installation is a one-day job in most homes: mounting frame on the terrace, collector and tank assembly, cold feed from the overhead tank, insulated hot line down to the bathrooms, an electrical backup heater connection where specified, and a commissioning test. We also relocate and reinstall existing systems, and service units bought elsewhere.
- V-Guard — widely available service network across Tamil Nadu
- Racold — strong FPC range, good for pressurised systems
- Supreme — value ETC systems for standard household use
- Havells — well-built ETC and FPC options with good tank insulation
- Sudarshan Saur — established solar thermal specialist
- Tata solar water heaters — premium build with long tank life
Price ranges and running savings
Indicative installed prices in Chennai run roughly Rs 18,000 to Rs 26,000 for a 100 litre ETC system, Rs 24,000 to Rs 34,000 for 150 litres, Rs 30,000 to Rs 42,000 for 200 litres, and Rs 45,000 to Rs 65,000 for 300 litres. FPC systems sit approximately 25% to 40% above these ranges. Final pricing depends on stand height, pipe run length, insulation grade and whether an electrical backup element is included.
A 200 litre electric geyser used daily by a family can consume 120 to 200 units a month. Because those units sit at the top of the TANGEDCO slab, removing them typically saves Rs 900 to Rs 1,600 a month — which is why a solar water heater usually returns its cost in two to three years and then runs almost free for another decade.
