PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana in Tamil Nadu
Up to Rs 78,000 credited directly to your bank account for rooftop solar. GenSolar Energy files the portal application, the TANGEDCO net-metering file and the inspection paperwork for you.
What the scheme actually gives you
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India's rooftop solar programme for residential electricity consumers, administered by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It combines a fixed central financial assistance amount with collateral-free bank finance and a national portal that tracks your application from feasibility to subsidy disbursal. In Tamil Nadu the distribution licensee is TANGEDCO, so your service number, sanctioned load and net-metering approval all flow through your local TANGEDCO section office.
The financial assistance is fixed by system size rather than by invoice value, which means the smaller your quoted price, the larger the share the government covers. For most Tamil Nadu homes the sweet spot is a 3 kW system: it earns the maximum Rs 78,000, generates roughly 360 to 400 units a month, and clears the expensive top slabs of a typical domestic TANGEDCO bill.
Subsidy slabs
| System size | Central subsidy | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | Rs 30,000 | Small homes, 100-150 units a month |
| 2 kW | Rs 60,000 | 2BHK homes, 200-300 units a month |
| 3 kW and above | Rs 78,000 (capped) | 3BHK homes and villas, 300+ units a month |
The Rs 78,000 figure is a cap. A 5 kW or 10 kW residential system still receives Rs 78,000, not more.
Who is eligible
- Indian citizen with a residential TANGEDCO connection
- Roof owned by you or with exclusive usage rights
- Valid electricity service number and Aadhaar
- Bank account for direct benefit transfer
- No central subsidy already claimed on the same connection
- ALMM-listed modules installed by a registered vendor
Step-by-step application guide
1. Register on the National Portal
Create a consumer account on pmsuryaghar.gov.in with your state, DISCOM (TANGEDCO) and electricity service number, then verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
2. Apply for feasibility approval
Submit the rooftop application with your latest electricity bill. TANGEDCO checks sanctioned load, connection category and technical feasibility — this usually returns in 2 to 5 business days.
3. Install through a registered vendor
GenSolar Energy is a registered vendor and authorised Tata Solar dealer. We install ALMM-listed modules and BIS-certified inverters, and upload the installation details and photographs to the portal.
4. Net meter and inspection
TANGEDCO installs the bidirectional meter and the inspecting authority verifies the plant. Net metering typically completes in 2 to 10 days.
5. Subsidy credited to your bank
Submit bank account details and a cancelled cheque on the portal. The subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary's account — never through the installer.
Documents to keep ready
Keep a recent TANGEDCO bill showing the service number and consumer name, Aadhaar, a cancelled cheque or passbook front page, and proof of roof ownership such as a property tax receipt or sale deed extract. If the connection is in a parent's or spouse's name, the portal application must be filed in that name — this is the single most common reason Tamil Nadu applications get returned.
What GenSolar handles for you
We register the application, upload vendor and installation records, coordinate the TANGEDCO feasibility and net-metering file, arrange the bidirectional meter and inspection, and follow the subsidy release until it lands in your account. As an authorised Tata Solar dealer working across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore and Viluppuram, our documentation matches what the portal and the section office expect — which is why most of our files clear on the first submission.
