Residential Rooftop Solar in Tamil Nadu

A shadow-free terrace of about 100 sq ft per kilowatt is all a Tamil Nadu home needs to cut its TANGEDCO bill to near zero. GenSolar Energy designs, installs and commissions grid-tied and hybrid home systems, and files the PM Surya Ghar subsidy and net-metering paperwork for you.

How much solar does a Tamil Nadu home actually need?

Sizing starts with your last six TANGEDCO bills, not with a catalogue. Chennai and the surrounding districts receive roughly 4.8 to 5.4 peak sun hours a day, so one installed kilowatt generates about 4 to 4.5 units on an average day and around 1,400 units a year. A family consuming 300 units a month usually lands on a 2 kW system; a 3BHK independent house with two air conditioners and a water pump typically needs 3 kW to 5 kW; large villas in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and ECR frequently go to 8 kW or 10 kW.

Because the bimonthly TANGEDCO slab structure makes the last units you consume the most expensive ones, even a partly sized system removes the costliest part of your bill first. That is why we quote a size that clears your highest-tariff consumption rather than the biggest array your roof can physically hold.

  • 1 kW needs roughly 100 sq ft of shadow-free terrace
  • 1 kW generates about 120-135 units per month in Tamil Nadu
  • Most homes reach payback in 3 to 4 years after subsidy

On-grid, hybrid or off-grid for a Tamil Nadu house

On-grid is the default choice for homes with a stable TANGEDCO supply. There is no battery, so cost and maintenance stay low, and surplus generation is exported through a bidirectional net meter and credited against night-time consumption. Hybrid systems add a lithium or tubular battery bank so essential loads such as fans, lights, router and fridge keep running through an outage - a popular option in Tiruvallur, Avadi and semi-urban Viluppuram where monsoon interruptions are common. Off-grid remains the right answer only for farmhouses and sites without a reliable service connection.

Whichever topology you choose, we specify Tier-1 monocrystalline PERC or TOPCon modules, a BIS-certified inverter with Wi-Fi monitoring, galvanised or aluminium mounting structures rated for coastal wind loads, and DC and AC surge protection. Coastal installations in Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and Kelambakkam get additional anti-corrosion treatment on the structure.

PM Surya Ghar subsidy and what you actually pay

Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana the central subsidy is Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW and Rs 78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above, capped at that figure. A typical 3 kW rooftop system in Chennai ranges from Rs 1,90,000 to Rs 2,30,000 depending on panel brand, inverter and structure height. The subsidy is credited directly to the beneficiary's bank account after commissioning and inspection - it is never routed through the installer.

Customers usually begin with a Rs 19,999 down payment, and the balance can be spread over collateral-free PM Surya Ghar loans from nationalised banks. Our team files the National Portal registration, uploads the vendor and inspection documents, and follows the TANGEDCO net-metering file until the bidirectional meter is fixed.

Timeline: from enquiry to first exported unit

Share roof photos and your location on WhatsApp and you have an indicative quote within about two hours. A physical site survey takes one day. The physical installation itself is finished in a single working day - roughly 8 to 10 hours for a standard residential array. PM Surya Ghar approval usually returns in 2 to 5 business days and TANGEDCO net metering in 2 to 10 days; several of our sites have gone from booking to exporting power within seven days.

Service coverage and after-sales

Our residential crews work daily across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore and Viluppuram, and we service the rest of Tamil Nadu's 38 districts on scheduled trips. Every home system ships with app-based generation monitoring, one year of free quarterly performance checks, a five-year workmanship warranty and optional annual maintenance covering panel cleaning, torque checks, earthing tests and inverter firmware.
