Current price bands
A 1 kW residential system in Tamil Nadu runs roughly Rs 75,000 to Rs 90,000. A 2 kW system lands between Rs 1,35,000 and Rs 1,60,000. The most common size, 3 kW, ranges from Rs 1,90,000 to Rs 2,30,000. A 5 kW system is typically Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 3,60,000 and 10 kW falls between Rs 5,80,000 and Rs 6,80,000. Per-kilowatt cost drops as size increases because the inverter, cabling, labour and paperwork are largely fixed.
What moves the price
Four things account for most of the variation: panel brand and cell technology, inverter make, mounting structure height, and cable run length. An elevated structure that preserves terrace usability adds fabrication cost. A long DC run from a rear terrace to a front meter board adds cable and conduit. Coastal sites in Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur or Kelambakkam need anti-corrosion treatment. None of these are optional extras invented at billing time — insist that they appear in the quote before you sign.
- Tier-1 mono PERC vs TOPCon or bifacial modules
- String inverter brand and warranty term
- Standard vs elevated or canopy structure
- Distance between array and meter board
Net cost after subsidy
Apply the PM Surya Ghar slab and the picture changes sharply. A 3 kW system quoted at Rs 2,10,000 receives Rs 78,000 back into the customer's bank account after commissioning. Against a household that was paying Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 a month to TANGEDCO, that puts payback in the three to four year range on an asset with a 25-year module performance warranty.
Where cheap quotes hide cost
Very low quotes usually cut somewhere specific: non-ALMM modules that disqualify you from the subsidy, an undersized or off-brand inverter, thin structural sections that rust within a few monsoons, or no net-metering liaison at all. Compare quotes on the module model number, inverter model number, structure specification and what happens in year three when something needs service.
